Unlocking Insight: Using the Thriving Lives Toolkit Survey Tool to Strengthen Support for Service Children
Posted in News
The Thriving Lives Toolkit provides a structured, evidence-based framework to help schools reflect on and strengthen their support for children from Armed Forces families. The Survey Tool enables schools to gain even deeper insights into the lived experiences of their Service children and parents/carers.
Why a Survey Tool?
While the Thriving Lives Toolkit helps schools evaluate their current provision across seven principles of effective support, the Survey Tool complements this by capturing valuable perspectives directly from those it aims to benefit: Service children and their families. By using the tool, schools can ensure their self-assessment is grounded in real voices, not just assumptions or impressions.
The Survey Tool supports schools in:
-
Gathering meaningful feedback from pupils and parents/carers
-
Identifying strengths and areas for development aligned with the Toolkit’s seven principles
-
Informing planning and measuring the impact of interventions
-
Strengthening relationships and engagement with Service families
What's Included?
The tool comprises three separate surveys, tailored for: Service children (Age 7+) Parents and carers Each survey is aligned with the Thriving Lives principles and explores areas such as school culture, transitions, SEND support, emotional wellbeing, and communication. The questions are carefully designed to be clear, accessible, and insightful, allowing schools to identify patterns and priority areas with confidence.
How Schools Are Using It
Schools across the UK are using the Survey Tool to support a more rounded approach to reflection and planning. Many are embedding it into annual review cycles or using it to evidence improvement planning. In particular, schools with smaller numbers of Service pupils have found it helpful in ensuring their provision is informed by personalised insight, rather than generic assumptions.
Driving Positive Change
The Survey Tool supports schools in not only better understanding the experiences of Service families but also in taking action based on what they learn. It offers a powerful opportunity to:
- Deepen listening practices
- Foster inclusion and belonging
- Strengthen staff confidence in supporting Service children
- Celebrate what’s working and identify where to go next
