The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Department for Education (DfE) have taken a significant step forward in supporting Service children in education with the release of the Service Pupils in Schools: Non-statutory Guidance. This comprehensive resource provides schools, local authorities, and education professionals with the tools and insights needed to ensure that Service pupils receive the support they deserve.

Recognising the unique challenges faced by Service children—including frequent mobility and parental deployment—the guidance underscores the importance of tailored support to promote their educational stability and wellbeing. The publication is a testament to the MOD and DfE’s continued commitment to enhancing the educational experiences of Service pupils across the UK.

A key highlight of the guidance is its emphasis on collaboration with a range of expert partners and resources. The Thriving Lives Toolkit, is among the valuable frameworks featured, equipping schools with an evidence-based approach to supporting Service pupils. The guidance also promotes the Ministry of Defence Local Authority Partnership (MODLAP), which fosters stronger collaboration between local authorities and the military community to enhance educational provision for Service children.

The guidance also includes a series of case studies showcasing best practices from schools that have successfully implemented support strategies for Service pupils. These real-world examples provide valuable insights into effective transition procedures, pastoral care initiatives, and academic support mechanisms.

Additionally, the guidance underscores the vital role of the Local Authority Service Pupil Champion, a dedicated advocate working to drive systemic improvements and ensure Service pupils’ needs are recognised and met at a strategic level. Another essential tool highlighted is the Common Transfer File (CTF), which facilitates the smooth transition of Service pupils by ensuring crucial educational data is transferred efficiently when they move between schools.

The release of this guidance represents a milestone in ensuring a consistent, high-quality approach to supporting Service children’s education. By equipping schools and local authorities with robust strategies and expert-backed resources, the MOD and DfE have reaffirmed their dedication to helping Service pupils thrive. Education professionals are encouraged to engage with the guidance and integrate its recommendations to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all Service children.
