Yesterday, the SCiP Alliance proudly celebrated the success of its annual conference, Inspiring Impact, held for the first time outside of England at the Marriott Hotel in Cardiff. Bringing together 100 delegates, many of whom were first-time attendees, the event proved to be a landmark occasion as it expanded its reach and embraced the opportunity to highlight the Welsh context. The change in location not only introduced fresh perspectives but also fostered new connections and ideas, strengthening the SCiP Alliance's vision to inspire impactful work that supports thriving lives for Service children.

One of the day’s highlights was the welcome by WO1 Rob Govier, who provided invaluable insights, particularly when sharing his experiences of deployment and the impact on his family left behind. SSCE Cymru, an organisation dedicated to supporting Service children’s education in Wales, made a notable impact with its strong presence. SSCE Cymru ambassadors shared personal stories, sparking meaningful conversations and deepening delegates' understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by Service children in Wales.

The conference also featured a video address from the Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Cairns. This was followed by an engaging Q&A session led by:

  • Russell Collier, Head of the Education Policy Team – Armed Forces Families & Safeguarding, Ministry of Defence
  • Ed Harris, Senior Education Officer, Ministry of Defence
  • Andrew Malcolm, Senior Education Officer, Ministry of Defence

Throughout the day, delegates chose from an impressive 11 workshops, delivered by a diverse array of organizations and individuals passionate about research, projects, and resources that support Service children. These sessions provided attendees with practical tools and knowledge, empowering them to create meaningful change within their own communities and workplaces.

The panel session provided a further opportunity for engagement, allowing delegates to pose questions to a diverse group of leaders. Panelists included Michelle Alston, Chief Executive of Forces in Mind Trust; Russell Collier from the UK Ministry of Defence; Leah Humphreys, Deputy Headteacher at Prendergast Community Primary School; and Jason Pollard from the Welsh Government. Each shared unique insights—from national policy to classroom strategies—offering delegates practical ideas and perspectives to support Service children and emphasizing the power of collaboration across sectors to drive meaningful change.

The Inspiring Impact conference was a resounding success, not only for the Alliance but also for every delegate who left with fresh inspiration and new connections. As the Alliance continues to expand its reach and inspire impact in new contexts, the success of this year’s event serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, learning, and commitment to improving outcomes for children from Armed Forces families.
