The new Service Children’s Progression Alliance welcomed 67 delegates from universities, colleges, schools, local authorities, the MoD and military charities to the University of Winchester’s historic West Downs building on 28th June 2017.
The conference opened with a keynote from Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, Chair of the APPG for the Armed Forces Covenant. This was followed by a lively debate about the challenges and opportunities for the children of armed forces families in education and how professionals can bridge the gaps and deliver on the armed forces covenant pledge that the families of those who serve in our armed forces will not be disadvantaged by that service. Jack Smith, Head of Programmes at the Office For Fair Access outlined OFFA's support for HE providers' work with service children.
Professor Nicola Fear, Director of the King's Centre for Military Research, delivered a keynote outlining the findings of the Kids Study which looked at the impact on children of having a father in the military.
